PRAY FOR THESE CHALLENGES:

  • The biggest initial challenge was communication as cell phone and internet use was very limited. We have had a lot of difficulty reaching pastors and they had difficulty reaching their congregants. Therefore, it has been very hard to find out the needs of folks and to compile a list of ministry opportunities. As cell phone communication has improved so has our ability to gather information on needed work.
  • The second challenge is that initially pastors were reporting that all their folks were OK. We realized OK means ‘safe’ but as we dug deeper we realized that they weren’t ok; they had trees down, flooded basements and other needs, but it has been hard to determine how much need there really is.
  • One positive observation is how much the local churches stepped up to help their people and their communities. As in SC, the local churches have been active during this time to minister to their flocks.
  • Another observation is that in the mountain culture, it seems folks are more reticent to ask for help and more capable of helping themselves. Many neighborhoods and communities pulled out their chainsaws and helped each other clean up after the storm.
  • Another huge challenge during this process is the avalanche of texts, emails, and phone calls that we have all been trying to manage after the storm. But this is a good problem to have, because it is the indication of a healthy PCA.
  • A final challenge is the geography as this storm impacted a vast amount of area in the mountains. It is a lot of terrain to cover, and travel is made more difficult with road closures and alternate routes.
